PLTA Bakaru benefits from Mamasa river

MO -- The hydropower plant (PLTA) in Bakaru, Pinrang regency, South Sulawesi province, is using some 80 percent of the water resources of Mamasa river in Mamasa regency, West Sulawesi province.

This was disclosed by West Sulawesi deputy governor Amri Sanusi in a discussion on a draft regional tax regulation at the legislative assembly of the province on Friday.

He said while West Sulawesi is administratively apart from South Sulawesi since 2004, but in terms of electric power resources, South Sulawesi is still using the water resources of Mamasa regency.

Therefore, he added, West Sulawesi earned tax profit sharing from South Sulawesi as the water resources in West Sulawesi is being used by South Sulawesi which has a wider area and having higher population density.

"The tax profit sharing is regulated under government regulation No 65 of 2000 on regional taxation, namely that Mamasa regency and West Sulawesi received a profit sharing from South Sulawesi," he said.

He said Mamasa and West Sulawesi received profit sharing from South Sulawesi from its water resources thanks to the efforts of the West Sulawesi governor and the West Sulawesi legislative assembly (DPRD).

Therefore, he added, the West Sulawesi governor had reached agreement with the South Sulawesi governor and state power company PLN VIII in 2007, and also following a meeting between members of the West Sulawesi and South Sulawesi legislative assemblies who had agreed to the profit sharing scheme.

He hoped the tax from the profit sharing scheme could raise the earnings of the people of West Sulawesi.(*)
